Nonviolent Communication
A Language of Life
by Marshall B. Rosenberg, Ph.D.

You were invited.

If you've landed on this page you were invited by a friend to participate with us, CBC Northshore, in the online monthly book study of the prestigious and internationally well known book by Marshall Rosenberg, Nonviolent Communication. It is the foremost authority on compassionate connection, communication, and community.

What is Nonviolent Communication?

Nonviolent Communication is the integration of four things:

  • Consciousness: a set of principles that support living a life of compassion, collaboration, courage, and authenticity.

  • Language: understanding how words contribute to connection or distance.

  • Communication: knowing how to ask for what we want, how to hear others even in disagreement, and how to move toward solutions that work for all.

  • Means of influence: sharing "power with others" rather than using "power over others".

Nonviolent Communication serves our desire to do three things:

  • Increase our ability to live with choice, meaning, and connection.

  • Connect empathically with self and others to have more satisfying relationships.

  • Sharing of resources so everyone is able to benefit.

What to do next.

Sign up and Donate: Below you can sign up for the book study - a monthly online zoom meeting. Currently, we are asking for donations as CBC Northshore has only its members (less than 10) to keep alive this dream for deeper community, connection and communication. Upon registering to join and donating a small amount to our book study (see details below) you will be sent an email with a webpage link. On the webpage you'll find a variety of data pertinent to this book study, including:

  • the monthly dates we're meeting

  • the monthly chapter schedule

  • who's leading and co-leading

  • links to purchase the NVC book (required) and the workbook (required if you want to lead)

  • the zoom link

Some logistics.
  • we meet very 3rd Wednesday of the month from 6:30-8:30pm central

  • meetings are online via zoom

  • it's not required to start on Day 1 (which is Wed 15 June 2022)

  • It's most beneficial to read up to the chapter of the month (there's topic discussion and activities), but minimally to have at least read the chapter(s) of the month.

  • This book study is a 12 month program designed to give ample time to experience and implement the skills this book offers.

  • The 3rd edition NVC book has 14 chapters - we plan for 1 chapter per month (with 2 exceptions)

“There is a yearning in the heart for peace. Because of the wounds and rejections we have received in past relationships, we are frightened by the risks. In our fear, we discount the dream of authentic Community as merely visionary. But there are rules by which people can come back together, by which the old wounds can be healed. The purpose of Community Building is to teach these rules - to make hope real again - and to make the vision actually manifest in a world which has almost forgotten the glory of what it means to be human.”
